Smart Home Automation Sydney

Control Freaks runs Sydney smart-home installs out of our Erina workshop on the Central Coast — a 90-minute M1 drive from the harbour, which shapes how we quote and schedule every Sydney job. Typical Sydney installs land in the $25,000-$60,000 bracket: a full Home Assistant build with security cameras, climate zoning, energy monitoring, custom dashboards and at least one piece of integration the customer thought wasn't possible. Anything under $8,000 doesn't justify the round-trip drive and we'll send you to a local installer instead.

Because we're driving down from Erina, we run Sydney as half-day or full-day install slots — never a 90-minute "drop in and tweak". That changes the project planning compared to a Central Coast job: parts pre-staged, network design signed off before the truck leaves, and a tight site-survey day weeks before the install so nothing surprises us on the day.

Sydney Suburbs We Drive To, Ranked by Frequency

Most of our Sydney work concentrates in five corridors. In rough order of how often we're there:

Northern Beaches — Avalon, Newport, Mona Vale, Palm Beach, Whale Beach. The closest Sydney premium tier for us (no harbour crossing), salt-air hardware demands, pool and outdoor entertaining systems. Detail at our Northern Beaches Home Assistant install page.

Inner West — Balmain, Rozelle, Leichhardt, Annandale, Newtown. Heritage terrace retrofits, narrow cabling runs, server placement in tight ceiling cavities. Currently rolled under the broader Sydney page rather than its own suburb file.

Hills District — Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills, Dural, Galston, Rouse Hill, Box Hill. Acreage irrigation, large multi-zone climate, new estate packages. Detail at how we run Hills District acreage installs from Dural to Galston.

North Shore — Pymble, Turramurra, Wahroonga, Killara, Gordon, Lindfield. Multi-level heritage retrofits, high-value security, AV for entertaining. Detail at heritage-friendly North Shore retrofits and multi-level integration.

Eastern Suburbs — Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Vaucluse, Double Bay. Smallest share of our Sydney work because of harbour-crossing drive time, but a viable corridor for $40k+ projects we can batch with North Shore site visits. Salt air + heritage + high security blend.

We also reach Penrith and the Western Sydney heat-island growth corridor and the Blue Mountains on appointment, both of which justify the longer M4 run with bigger project scopes.

Indicative Sydney Project Brackets

Sydney pricing runs higher than our Central Coast brackets because of the drive and the slightly larger average home. As of 2026, a full-residential install in Sydney typically lands somewhere in these ranges:

$25k-$35k — 4-bedroom Northern Beaches house, two-zone climate, Reolink camera coverage (4-6 cameras), Shelly EM3 energy monitoring with solar inverter integration, smart lighting on the main living level, custom Lovelace dashboard, alarm panel integration. Three to four days on site over two visits.

$35k-$50k — Hills District acreage or North Shore multi-level: full house climate zoning, garage and gate automation, perimeter cameras (8-10 cameras with PoE switching), Aqara FP2 mmWave presence sensors in main rooms, pool integration, irrigation, full ESPHome custom hardware where needed. Five to seven days on site.

$50k-$60k+ — Premium Eastern Suburbs or Palm Beach harbour-front: everything above plus integrated AV across multiple rooms, server-grade rack with UPS, dual-WAN failover networking, high-end Zigbee + Z-Wave dual mesh for survivability, multiple wall-mount kiosk tablets, hardwired motorised blinds.

None of these brackets include the actual security camera hardware or AC units — they're the integration, commissioning and the Home Assistant ecosystem we install around them. We're brand-neutral and won't quote you Crestron or Control4. Open standards, your hardware, no vendor lock-in.

The 90-Minute Drive Changes Everything About How We Run a Sydney Job

The most common Sydney misunderstanding: customers used to a same-day electrician callout expect we can pop down to tweak a Zigbee mesh. We can't. The drive is the drive. So we lean heavily on remote support — every system we commission in Sydney comes with our remote-monitoring access (with your consent and revocable) so we fix 80% of post-install issues from Erina without coming back. The other 20% gets scheduled into a Sydney run with two or three other jobs.

For new clients in Sydney, we'll usually do a paid Sydney site visit and design assessment rather than a free one, because the round-trip drive is half a day. The fee comes off the install quote if you proceed. This filters out tyre-kickers and respects everyone's time.

What Sydney Customers Actually Want From a Smart Home

Three patterns dominate Sydney enquiries. Energy monitoring — Sydney has time-of-use pricing on the AusGrid network plus high solar penetration, which means a household that doesn't see what its peak-rate draw looks like in real time is bleeding money invisibly. We install circuit-level energy monitoring with Shelly EM3 and Emporia Vue as the first commissioned automation on most Sydney jobs.

Second, security camera + entry integration for time-poor households where the cleaner, the cleaner's husband, the gardener, the dog walker and three Amazon couriers all need door access without a hidden key. Reolink cameras with AI person and vehicle detection feed Home Assistant; smart locks let us issue temporary access codes that expire.

Third, climate zoning — Sydney homes are large, often two-storey, and ducted AC running flat-out conditioning empty rooms is the single biggest controllable waste on a power bill. Aqara FP2 mmWave sensors detect actual presence (not just motion) per room and zone valves shut off accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge a callout fee for Sydney jobs?

Not on commissioned installs — the drive is built into the project quote. For one-off troubleshooting or design consults, we charge a paid Sydney site visit fee (currently $480 + GST) which comes off your install quote if you proceed within 90 days.

What's the minimum project size for a Sydney install?

$8,000 is our floor for Sydney work. Below that the 90-minute drive doesn't make sense for either of us, and we'll refer you to a local installer instead. Most actual Sydney jobs land $25k-$60k.

How fast can you respond to a fault call from Sydney?

Remote-monitoring access lets us diagnose and often fix issues the same day without driving down. If a physical site visit is needed, we schedule into the next Sydney run, usually within 7-10 days. For genuine emergencies (security system down, total automation failure) we'll prioritise.

Do you only work in the suburbs listed above?

No — those are just the corridors we're in most often. We've run jobs in Sutherland Shire, the Lower North Shore, and the Inner West too. If your suburb isn't named, ask. The only hard rule is the project size has to clear $8k.
